What to Expect When App State Takes on NC State

ASF StaffASF StaffSep 27, 2026 · 3 min read · 16 views

App State's unbeaten start to the 2026 season faces its biggest test yet when the Mountaineers travel to Raleigh to take on NC State on Saturday.

The Mountaineers enter the matchup 3-0 after victories over Maine, East Carolina and Charlotte, while NC State is 1-2 following a 35-31 loss to Vanderbilt.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET at Carter-Finley Stadium.

A Different Level of Challenge

App State has already shown that it can compete in close games, defeating East Carolina 27-24 before beating Charlotte 26-21. NC State, however, brings an ACC opponent and a more experienced test to the schedule.

The Wolfpack is averaging 449.3 total yards per game, including 223.3 rushing yards and 226 passing yards through three games.

That balance will put pressure on an App State defense that has already been tested by two FBS opponents.

Bailey and Jackson Lead the Way

NC State quarterback CJ Bailey has thrown for 640 yards through three games, while running back Jayden "Duke" Scott has recorded 198 rushing yards.

Wide receiver Keenan Jackson leads the Wolfpack with 231 receiving yards. Bailey's performance against Vanderbilt was particularly notable. He completed 25 of 37 passes for 275 yards and three touchdowns despite NC State ultimately losing the game.

App State will have to find a way to limit that passing connection while also dealing with NC State's rushing production.

Another Test for Malachi Singleton

On the other side, Malachi Singleton enters Raleigh after producing his best game of the season against Charlotte.

Singleton threw for a career-high 331 yards and two touchdowns in the 26-21 victory, bringing his season totals through three games to 889 passing yards, five touchdowns and one interception.

NC State will present a different defensive challenge, and Singleton's decision-making will be important if App State is going to consistently move the football. His ability to avoid turnovers will be particularly important against a Wolfpack defense that has already shown it can create extra possessions.

App State Must Finish Strong

The Charlotte game also provided an important lesson for the Mountaineers.

App State led 26-7 early in the fourth quarter but allowed Charlotte to cut the deficit to five before the Mountaineers eventually closed out the victory. That type of late-game drop-off will be something to watch in Raleigh.

NC State itself experienced a dramatic late collapse against Vanderbilt, surrendering the winning touchdown with one second remaining. Both teams therefore enter the matchup looking to respond from very different fourth-quarter experiences.

History Against the Wolfpack

History has heavily favored NC State in this matchup. The Wolfpack has won all six previous meetings with App State, including a 23-10 victory in the teams' most recent meeting in 2006.

Saturday's game will be App State's first visit to Carter-Finley Stadium since that 2006 meeting.

A Major Early-Season Measuring Stick

For App State, this game represents an opportunity to see how its 3-0 start holds up against an ACC opponent.

The Mountaineers have already demonstrated offensive production, with Singleton leading an attack that has scored at least 26 points in each game.

The challenge now is doing it against NC State, while simultaneously limiting a Wolfpack offense averaging nearly 450 yards per game.

The matchup should provide one of the clearest indications yet of where App State stands as it moves deeper into the 2026 season.
