What Have We Learned From the Mountaineers' 2-0 Start?

ASF StaffASF StaffSep 13, 2026 · 2 min read · 12 views

Two games into the 2026 season, Appalachian State has already produced two very different performances.

The Mountaineers opened with a 55-3 demolition of Maine before traveling to East Carolina and escaping with a 27-24 victory. The results have put App State at 2-0, but the bigger question is what these two games actually tell us about the team.

So far, there is plenty to like, although there are also reasons to remain cautious.

The offense has made an early statement

The most encouraging development has been the offense.

Against Maine, App State scored 55 points and produced 647 total yards. The Mountaineers scored on nine consecutive possessions after their opening drive ended in a turnover on downs. Malachi Singleton was particularly impressive, completing 22 of 24 passes for 291 yards and three touchdowns in less than three quarters.

The challenge was different against ECU, but the offense still managed 27 points on the road.

That consistency is encouraging, especially considering the significant roster turnover entering the season.

The defense looks much improved

There are also strong early signs on the defense.

The unit dominated Maine, allowing just three points and keeping the Black Bears without a first down until the final three minutes of the first half. App State also recorded two interceptions and eight tackles for loss in the opener.

The ECU game was naturally more demanding, with the Pirates able to score 24 points.

That makes the defensive performance in Greenville particularly important to evaluate going forward. The unit did enough to give App State a chance to win, but there is still room for improvement if the Mountaineers want to compete consistently against stronger opponents.

The biggest positive: they are finding ways to win

Perhaps the most encouraging thing about these first two weeks is that App State has not needed the same formula twice.

Against Maine, the Mountaineers overwhelmed their opponent from start to finish. Against ECU, they had to deal with a much closer contest and protect a lead late. That variety matters.

After last year's 5-8 season, including a 2-6 Sun Belt record, this is exactly the type of start App State needed.

But the real test is still ahead

It would be premature to declare App State a finished product.

Maine is an FCS opponent, while ECU entered the matchup after a 48-10 loss at Alabama. That makes the next stretch of the schedule much more revealing.

For now, though, the Mountaineers deserve credit.

Our early grade: A-

A 2-0 record, a 55-point scoring margin and an impressive road victory are difficult to argue with. The next step is proving that this is not simply a good start, but the beginning of a genuinely improved App State team.

Two games have provided optimism. The next few will tell us how real it is.
