Appalachian State Soccer created numerous scoring opportunities on Alumni Day at The Valley but couldn’t convert their chances, falling 2-0 to Marshall on Sunday. The Mountaineers (5-7-3, 1-4-3 Sun Belt) outshot the Thundering Herd in the opening half and generated quality looks throughout the contest but were unable to break through against a resilient Marshall defense.
Offensive Pressure Without Reward
App State produced 12 total shots, including five on target, while earning seven corner kicks. Junior midfielder Olivia Simon led the attacking charge with four shots, nearly opening the scoring in the fifth minute with consecutive close-range attempts, one saved and another blocked by Marshall defenders.
Graduate forward Izzi Wood and redshirt sophomore midfielder Kyli Switalski each contributed two shots, while senior midfielder Shannon Studer came close to scoring in the 25th minute when a Marshall defender headed away her attempt following an App State corner kick.
The Mountaineers dominated the first half statistically, holding a 4-1 advantage in shots on target, but entered halftime scoreless.
Second-Half Breakthrough for Marshall
Marshall (7-5-3, 3-2-3) capitalized on their opportunities in the second half. Tiggi Gent broke the deadlock in the 69th minute, finishing assists from Marcella Alves and Madison Townes. Alves extended the lead nine minutes later, converting Fernanda Dantas’ corner kick serve to seal the victory.
Defensive Resilience Keeps Match Competitive
Freshman goalkeeper Hanna Skogsfors recorded six saves, keeping the match scoreless until the 69th minute. Her most impressive stop came 10 minutes into the second half when she denied Alves on a one-on-one opportunity.
Freshman defender Maddie Williams played all 90 minutes for the 13th time this season, showcasing her defensive capabilities by blocking three consecutive crosses to disrupt a dangerous Marshall counterattack early in the second half. Fellow defenders Hayden Petrick and Lucy Harrington also completed the full 90 minutes for the Mountaineers.
App State travels to Southern Miss on Friday for a 4 p.m. ET kickoff on ESPN+. The Golden Eagles enter the match at 1-7 in Sun Belt Conference play, providing the Mountaineers an opportunity to return to winning form on the road.
Despite the disappointing result, App State’s ability to generate scoring chances and control possession for extended stretches offers encouragement as they prepare for their final conference matches.
