Appalachian State snapped a four-game losing streak with a thrilling 26-24 victory over Marshall on Saturday, moving within one win of bowl eligibility at 5-6. The sold-out crowd of 31,322 at Kidd Brewer Stadium, the 15th sellout in 16 home games and 23rd consecutive attendance above 30,000 witnessed the Mountaineers improve their all-time series lead to 17-11 (11-3 in Boone), extending the home team’s winning streak in this rivalry to six years.
Turnover Margin Determines Outcome
App State forced three turnovers while committing none, improving to 4-0 when winning the turnover battle (1-4 when losing, 0-2 when tied). Fourth-quarter forced fumbles by Caleb Sandstrom (5:33) and Colton Phares (0:55) proved decisive, while Emory Floyd recorded his first collegiate interception off a deflection. Dylan Manuel and Aiden Benton (team-leading fourth sack) each brought down Marshall quarterbacks.
Lewis Delivers Breakout Performance
True freshman Jaquari Lewis rushed 33 times for a career-high 175 yards and two touchdowns (18, 5 yards) while adding five catches for 39 yards, 214 all-purpose yards total. His rushing total ranks second-most by an App State freshman in the FBS era, trailing only Jalin Moore’s 244 against Idaho (Nov. 14, 2015). Lewis’ 20-yard fourth-and-1 conversion late in the second quarter set up a touchdown that cut the deficit to five points.
Second-Half Defensive Dominance
Defensive coordinator DJ Smith’s unit allowed just three points and generated two takeaways after halftime, stifling Marshall’s comeback attempts.
Offensive Balance
JJ Kohl completed 19 of 27 passes for 134 yards and one touchdown without turnovers. David Larkins caught four passes for 27 yards, including a 19-yard touchdown reducing the deficit to 21-16 before halftime. Sam Mbake recorded a career-high seven receptions (39 yards), including a crucial third-down conversion on the game-winning drive.
Special Teams Excellence
Freshman Dominic De Freitas converted field goals of 32 and 23 yards, with his 23-yarder at 2:02 providing the winning margin. He’s now 15-of-18 on field goals (8 straight makes, 10-for-10 inside 40 yards).
DeNigel Cooper blocked Marshall’s 28-yard field goal attempt early in the fourth quarter, his second block this season, preventing a four-point Thundering Herd lead.
Ian Ratliff punted six times for a 47.7-yard average, including a career-long 70-yarder to Marshall’s 1-yard line, App State’s longest since Sam Martin’s 74-yarder against Wofford in 2009.
