How App State Should Prepare for Charlotte After 2-0 Start

ASF StaffASF StaffSep 13, 2026 · 2 min read · 12 views

Appalachian State has every reason to feel good about its 2-0 start.

A 55-3 opening-day win over Maine was followed by a much tighter 27-24 victory at East Carolina. Now, the Mountaineers return to Boone to face Charlotte on Sept. 19, with another opportunity to show that this early success can develop into something more substantial.

But the preparation should not simply be about celebrating the wins. App State needs to use what happened in Greenville as a lesson.

Clean Up the Fourth Quarter

The biggest priority should be finishing games. App State controlled much of the East Carolina matchup but had to withstand a late rally. Against better opponents, allowing a game to become unnecessarily close in the final minutes could prove costly.

The coaching staff should use the ECU film to identify where the defense lost its rhythm and where the offense can be more efficient when protecting a lead.

Keep Building Around Singleton

Malachi Singleton has given App State an encouraging start at quarterback.

After completing 22 of 24 passes for 291 yards and three touchdowns against Maine, he followed that performance by helping the Mountaineers produce another winning offensive performance at ECU.

The next step is consistency.

App State should continue giving Singleton opportunities to make decisions, while also making sure the offense does not become overly dependent on him. The opening-week performance showed that the Mountaineers have multiple players capable of contributing, with 12 different players catching passes against Maine.

Make Charlotte a Different Challenge

Charlotte should not be treated as simply another game on the schedule.

The 49ers are the next opponent before App State travels to NC State on Sept. 26, making this an important part of the early-season stretch.

Playing at home gives App State an advantage, but it also creates expectations. The Mountaineers need to start quickly, avoid unnecessary penalties and turnovers, and establish control without losing the discipline that has helped them open 2-0.

The Advantage For App State

This is where App State's preparation becomes more important than its record.

The Mountaineers have already shown they can dominate an opponent and win a close road game. Charlotte provides another chance to test that growth before the significantly tougher trip to NC State.

The goal should be simple: play cleaner, finish stronger and keep improving.

At 2-0, App State does not need to reinvent itself. It needs to build on what is working while correcting the weaknesses exposed in Greenville.

If the Mountaineers can do that, the Charlotte game could become another important step in determining just how different this team is from last year's 5-8 squad.
