Five Storylines to Watch in the Opener

ASF StaffASF StaffSep 3, 2026 · 3 min read · 16 views

Before kickoff against Maine, App State entered the 2026 season with more questions than answers.

A new quarterback had to emerge. A rebuilt defense needed to show progress. Dozens of newcomers were preparing for their first meaningful snaps as Mountaineers. And after a 5-8 finish last season, the larger question was whether Year Two under Dowell Loggains would look different.

One game cannot answer everything. But App State's 55-3 victory over Maine provided an encouraging first set of answers.

1. The Quarterback Question Was Answered Quickly

Malachi Singleton entered the season as one of the most closely watched players on the roster.

In his first collegiate start, the Arkansas and Purdue transfer completed 22 of 24 passes for 291 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. His 91.7 percent completion rate was the third-best in App State history for a quarterback with more than 10 completions.

Singleton helped the Mountaineers build a 31-0 halftime lead before leaving the game in the third quarter.

The quarterback competition may have dominated preseason discussion, but Singleton's opening performance gave App State an early answer.

2. The Newcomers Made an Immediate Impact

App State entered the season with newcomers, making the Maine game the first live test of a significantly rebuilt roster.

The newcomers did not have to wait long to contribute.

First-time Mountaineer starters included Singleton, Samuel Pickett III, Chris Lofton, Darrin Fugitt, Dillon Galloway, four defensive backs, two linebackers and two defensive linemen.

Pickett was particularly impressive, catching five passes for 76 yards and two touchdowns. Fugitt added four catches for 47 yards and a touchdown.

According to App State's postgame notes, the top six pass catchers against Maine were all newcomers.

3. The Defense Delivered a Strong First Statement

Improvement on defense was another major storyline entering the season.

Against Maine, the Mountaineers allowed just three points, 250 total yards and 52 rushing yards. The Black Bears managed only 12 first downs.

Alex Mitchell led App State with six tackles, while Carson Sloan added five.

Colton Phares made an impact across the defense with four tackles, a sack, an interception and a pass breakup.

The competition will become tougher as the season progresses, but the opener offered an encouraging first performance from a defense featuring several new starters.

4. Kidd Brewer Stadium Remained a Major Factor

The season opener drew 33,664 fans, marking the 16th sellout in App State's last 18 games at Kidd Brewer Stadium.

For many newcomers, it was their first opportunity to experience The Rock as Mountaineers.

The crowd watched App State score its most points since 2023 and record its largest margin of victory since a 72-7 win over Gardner-Webb in 2018.

5. The Bigger Story Was the Team's Response

Perhaps the most important storyline was not about one player or position.

It was about whether App State could begin Year Two under Loggains differently after last season's 5-8 record.

The Mountaineers finished with 647 total yards, including 348 passing yards and 299 rushing yards. Twelve players caught passes, nine recorded carries and six scored touchdowns.

The opener was only one game, and Maine is an FCS opponent. Tougher tests are ahead.
