Fall Camp Standouts and Depth Chart Buzz

ASF StaffASF StaffSep 3, 2026 · 3 min read · 12 views

Fall camp is full of questions, projections and position battles. App State's season opener against Maine provided the first real answers. After entering the 2026 season with newcomers the Mountaineers had more uncertainty than most programs heading into camp. Who would win the quarterback job? Which newcomers would break into the starting lineup? And how quickly could a heavily rebuilt roster come together?

Saturday's 55-3 victory over Maine revealed several players who have moved from preseason competition to important game-day roles.

Singleton Takes Control at Quarterback

The biggest question of camp was at quarterback, and Malachi Singleton provided an emphatic answer in his first start.

The Arkansas and Purdue transfer completed 22 of 24 passes for 291 yards and three touchdowns without an interception before leaving the game in the third quarter. His 91.7 percent completion rate was the third-best in App State history for a quarterback with more than 10 completions.

Singleton's performance confirmed what had been building around the quarterback competition throughout the offseason: he had positioned himself to lead the offense.

The Mountaineers still used Henry Hasselbeck and Tommy Ulatowski, but Singleton's debut made a strong first impression.

Pickett and the New-Look Receiving Corps

Samuel Pickett III was another newcomer who immediately made his presence felt. Pickett led App State with five catches for 76 yards and two touchdowns, becoming Singleton's most productive target against Maine.

The receiving group had been one of the harder positions to project during camp because of the number of new faces. But Pickett's opening performance provided an early indication that he could become a significant part of the offense.

The newcomers were productive across the board. According to App State's postgame notes, the top six pass catchers against Maine were all newcomers, including freshman tight end Jamel Howse, who had four receptions for 53 yards, and Darrin Fugitt, who caught four passes for 47 yards and a touchdown.

New Faces Fill the Defensive Depth Chart

The first-game starting lineup also showed how extensively App State's roster turnover affected the defense. First-time Mountaineer starters included defensive backs Juan Berchal, Khalil Conley, Devin Henderson and Kaleb Purdy; linebackers Carson Sloan and Alex Mitchell; and defensive linemen Jehchys Brown and Aaron Clark.

That group helped limit Maine to 250 total yards, 52 rushing yards and 12 first downs.

Returning All-Sun Belt linebacker Colton Phares remained one of the defense's established leaders, recording four tackles, a sack, an interception and a pass breakup. Alex Mitchell led the team with six tackles, while Sloan added five.

The result was an encouraging first look at a defense featuring several new starters.

A Crowded Backfield Shows Its Depth

The running game also reflected the competition that developed during camp. Jaquari Lewis led App State with 69 rushing yards and a touchdown, while newcomer Ja'Quez Cross added 66 yards on seven carries. Treyaun Webb also scored in his App State debut.

Rather than one player dominating the workload, App State used multiple backs and spread opportunities throughout the offense.

Camp Questions Become Game-Day Answers

One game does not settle an entire season. But App State's opener provided a clearer picture than fall camp ever could. Singleton appears to have taken control of the quarterback position, Pickett emerged as an immediate receiving threat, and a long list of newcomers earned starting roles and meaningful snaps.

After one game, several of App State's new faces have already become central to what happens next.
