Appalachian State (4-6, 1-5 SBC) closes its regular season with consecutive home games, beginning Saturday’s 2:30 p.m. Sun Belt clash against Marshall (5-5, 3-3 SBC) at a sold-out Kidd Brewer Stadium. The Black Saturday and Heroes Day celebration, broadcast on ESPN+, features the 20th anniversary reunion of the 2005 national championship team, Hall of Fame coach Jerry Moore’s first of three consecutive titles.
Contrasting Trajectories
The Mountaineers have dropped four straight games, including both Sun Belt home contests, while first-year coach Dowell Loggains works to rebuild the program. Marshall, under new head coach Tony Gibson (former NC State defensive coordinator), has rebounded from an 0-2 start to go 5-3, averaging 37.4 points during that stretch despite two-overtime contests against Louisiana (54-51 loss) and Texas State (40-37 win).
Marshall’s Ground Attack
After a 45-7 opening loss at Georgia, the Thundering Herd average 221.1 rushing yards per game, led by dual-threat quarterback Carlos Del Rio-Wilson’s 65.2 yards per contest. The former Florida and Syracuse signal-caller orchestrated Marshall’s 248-yard rushing performance against James Madison—the same JMU defense that held App State to one rushing yard.
Running back Antwan Roberts posted consecutive 120-plus-yard games against Coastal Carolina and JMU before Marshall’s 168-yard output last weekend at Georgia State.
Aerial Balance
Despite the rushing reduction at Georgia State, Del Rio-Wilson completed 22 of 27 passes for a season-high 321 yards, throwing at least three touchdowns for the third time this season.
Mountaineers’ Challenges
App State quarterback AJ Swann, who had started the previous two games after returning from September injury, suffered a different injury at JMU and is listed as out. JJ Kohl makes his fifth start for an increasingly shorthanded offense.
Turnovers remain problematic for the Mountaineers, with Marshall’s defense generating 20 takeaways this season, including 13 interceptions. The Thundering Herd collected five takeaways against ODU, three versus Texas State, and three at Georgia State during their last three victories.
App State still ranks second in the Sun Belt allowing 135.0 rushing yards per game despite surrendering 324 to James Madison.
Series History
The home team has won all five previous meetings, including Sun Belt matchups in 2022 (Marshall), 2023 (App State), and 2024 (Marshall).
