Appalachian State opened its 2026 football season in big fashion Saturday, defeating Maine 55-3 before a sold-out crowd of 33,664 at Kidd Brewer Stadium. The victory marked App State's largest margin of victory since a 72-7 win over Gardner-Webb in 2018 and gave the Mountaineers a 1-0 start in Dowell Loggains' second season as head coach.

Quarterback Malachi Singleton led the way in his first collegiate start. The transfer quarterback completed 22 of 24 passes for 291 yards and three touchdowns without an interception, helping App State build a 31-0 halftime lead.

Singleton's 91.7 completion percentage was the third-best single-game mark in program history for an App State quarterback with more than 10 completions.

Fast Start Sets the Tone

App State's first offensive possession ended with a turnover near the Maine goal line, but the Mountaineers responded by scoring on their next nine possessions.

Treyaun Webb opened the scoring with a two-yard touchdown run midway through the first quarter, finishing a four-play, 78-yard drive.

The Mountaineers took control in the second quarter. James London converted a 31-yard field goal before Singleton connected with tight end Darrin Fugitt for a five-yard touchdown. Singleton later found Samuel Pickett III for two touchdown passes as App State continued to pull away.

The Mountaineers led 31-0 at halftime and extended the advantage to 38-0 before Maine finally got on the scoreboard with a field goal late in the third quarter.

App State added 17 more points in the fourth quarter to complete the 55-3 victory.

Singleton Shines in Debut

The quarterback competition had been one of the major storylines entering the season, and Singleton made an immediate statement in his first start.

The former Arkansas and Purdue quarterback distributed the ball effectively throughout the afternoon, with 12 different receivers recording a catch for App State.

Pickett led the Mountaineers with five receptions for 76 yards and two touchdowns. Fugitt added four catches for 47 yards and a score, while freshman tight end Jamel Howse recorded four receptions for 53 yards.

The rushing attack also produced several contributors. Jaquari Lewis led App State with 69 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries, while Ja'Quez Cross added 66 yards on seven attempts.

App State finished with 647 total yards, including 348 through the air and 299 on the ground.

Defense Dominates Maine

The Mountaineers were equally dominant defensively. App State limited Maine to 250 total yards, 12 first downs and 52 rushing yards. The Black Bears converted just six of their 15 third-down attempts.

Alex Mitchell led App State with six tackles, while Carson Sloan added five. Returning All-Sun Belt linebacker Colton Phares made an impact across the field, recording four tackles, a sack, an interception and a pass breakup. Caleb Sandstrom added a sack, while Caleb Pitts recorded the first interception of his collegiate career.

App State's defense forced Maine into four consecutive three-and-outs before the Black Bears recorded their first first down late in the second quarter.

The victory gave App State its seventh season-opening win in the last eight years and its fourth consecutive home-opening victory.

The Mountaineers will now face a more demanding test next Saturday when they travel to Greenville, North Carolina, to face East Carolina.
