The App State men’s basketball team (18-9, 10-4 SBC) travels to Harrisonburg, Virginia, seeking its eighth consecutive victory in a Saturday afternoon clash with James Madison at the Atlantic Union Bank Center. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. on ESPN+ in the second and final regular-season meeting between the teams.

Standings and Momentum

App State sits atop the Sun Belt standings following Wednesday’s victory over Georgia Southern combined with Troy’s loss to Texas State. The Mountaineers are the only conference team with double-digit wins and are pursuing their second regular-season Sun Belt championship in three years.

Wednesday’s triumph marked App State’s 10th conference victory, the third consecutive season reaching that milestone. The last time the program achieved three straight 10-win conference seasons was 1997-2000, culminating in an NCAA Tournament appearance. The Mountaineers have compiled 36 conference victories over the past two seasons.

App State’s success earned them a No. 24 ranking in Monday’s College Insider Mid-Major Top 25, their first appearance since the final 2023-24 poll. The Mountaineers join Troy (18th) as the Sun Belt’s only ranked teams.

Recent Performance

After trailing by just four at halftime Wednesday, App State opened the second half with a 14-5 run and cruised to an 81-65 victory. Kasen Jennings dominated with 31 points—his second 30-point performance in 10 days—becoming the first Mountaineer since 2018-19 to post multiple 30-point games in a season. He scored 11 points during a crucial stretch that expanded a seven-point lead to 18.

Team Strengths

App State leads the Sun Belt in scoring defense (64.1 points per game) and ranks 10th nationally. The Mountaineers have grabbed at least 35 rebounds in 15 of their last 18 games and won the rebounding battle in 14 of their last 15 contests.

Jennings (15.6 points per game) and Alonzo Dodd (13.5) pace the scoring. Dodd has scored in double figures in five straight games, while Michael Marcus Jr. posted a 20-point, 10-rebound double-double Wednesday.

Scouting James Madison

The Dukes (13-13) enter on a two-game winning streak after defeating Georgia State in overtime Thursday. Nine of their 13 victories have come at home, where they’ve won at least 10 games annually since joining the Sun Belt in 2022-23.

Justin McBride leads James Madison at 16.6 points per game and scored 22 Thursday for his ninth 20-point game. Cliff Davis added 26 points and averages 16 per game in conference play.

App State won the first meeting 80-65 in Boone on Jan. 15 and seeks its first season sweep of a conference opponent.
