The App State men’s basketball team (13-9, 6-4 SBC) looks to extend its winning streak to three games with a road matchup against Southern Miss (11-11, 5-5 SBC) on Thursday at 8 p.m. ET at Reed Green Coliseum on ESPN+.
Sun Belt West Schedule
App State is in the midst of a five-game stretch against Sun Belt West schools, having hosted Louisiana and ULM last week. The Mountaineers travel to Southern Miss and Troy (Saturday) before hosting South Alabama next Wednesday.
App State holds a 24-22 record against West teams in the Dustin Kerns era and enters Thursday 2-0 against West opponents this season. The Mountaineers lead all Sun Belt teams with 71 conference wins since 2019, four ahead of South Alabama (67), and need just four more victories for their third consecutive 10-win Sun Belt season.
Last Time Out
Playing on back-to-back days after a winter storm, App State posted consecutive double-digit wins. The Mountaineers used a strong second half for a 14-point victory over Louisiana, then delivered one of their best defensive performances in a 16-point win over ULM.
App State allowed just 43 points to ULM—matching the fewest against a Division I opponent in the Kerns era—and limited the Warhawks to 13 made field goals, the fewest allowed since at least 2002-03. Against Louisiana, Jalen Tot hit six second-half 3-pointers during a decisive 15-2 run.
Current Form
App State has won nine of its last 13 games and sits two games behind leader Troy. The Mountaineers lead the Sun Belt in scoring defense (65.5 points per game) and have held back-to-back opponents below 60 points for the 19th and 20th times since last season.
Three players average double figures: Kasen Jennings (14.6), Alonzo Dodd (12.8), and Luke Wilson (10.8). Dodd averages 14.9 points in conference play, while Jennings has scored at least 17 in three of his last four games.
Scouting Southern Miss
The Golden Eagles started conference play 5-1 but have lost four straight, all on the road. However, Southern Miss is 6-1 at home this season and 41-10 at Reed Green Coliseum since 2022-23, averaging 88.5 points per home game. Tylik Weeks leads the team and ranks third in the Sun Belt with 17.8 points per game.
App State travels to Troy on Saturday at 4:33p.m. ET.
