Despite leading for 31 minutes and by as many as 13 points, the App State men’s basketball team (10-8, 3-3 SBC) fell to Coastal Carolina 71-64 on Saturday in the final game of its four-game road trip. The Chanticleers (9-9, 2-4 SBC) took the lead late after a Joshua Beadle 3-pointer and held on for the victory.
Second-Half Struggles
App State’s defense struggled to contain Coastal Carolina in the second half, as the Chanticleers scored 41 points and shot 64 percent from the field. Beadle scored 20 of his points in the final frame to lead the comeback.
App State shot a season-high 76.5 percent from the free-throw line, making 13 of 17 attempts. Alonzo Dodd, Kasen Jennings, Jalen Tot, and Michael Marcus Jr. combined for a perfect 11-11 from the charity stripe.
How It Happened
App State shot just 32 percent from the field in the first half but led by six at halftime thanks to strong 3-point shooting. Marcus Jr. and Tot each hit two treys, while Jennings led all scorers with nine first-half points. The Mountaineers committed zero first-half turnovers.
Tot opened the second half with a 3-pointer, and Dodd added a layup to push the lead to 11. Coastal Carolina responded by cutting the deficit to seven, then tied the score with a 6-0 run.
The teams traded leads throughout the remainder. Dodd’s floater through contact gave App State a one-point lead with 8:56 left. After Beadle’s free throws, Dodd drilled a 3-pointer to reclaim the lead.
Coastal Carolina answered with two 3-pointers and a layup to go ahead by four at the final media timeout. Reggie Hill’s score with 27 seconds remaining sealed the victory.
